Are my PDF files safe? Do you store my files? +
Your files are completely safe and we store absolutely nothing. For 27 out of 29 tools, your PDF never leaves your device — it is processed entirely in your browser using JavaScript. We have no technical ability to access your file. For PDF to Word (server-side), your file is encrypted in transit, converted, and permanently deleted immediately after. No copies, no logs.
Does PDFHarbor upload my files to a server? +
No — for 27 out of 29 tools. Merge, Split, Compress, Rotate, Protect, Watermark, E-Signature, and all annotation tools run entirely in your browser using pdf-lib and PDF.js. Only PDF to Word requires a server — your file is encrypted in transit and deleted immediately after conversion.
Is PDFHarbor really free? Are there hidden charges? +
Yes, completely free — all 29 tools cost $0 with no hidden charges, no watermarks on output files, no usage limits, and no credit card required. We sustain the site through advertising. Some future premium tools powered by Adobe's API may have a small per-use fee, but the core tools will always be free.
Do I need to create an account? +
No. PDFHarbor requires no account, no sign-up, and no email address. Every tool is available immediately with no registration. We believe PDF tools should be as frictionless as possible.
Is there a file size limit? +
There is no hard limit set by PDFHarbor. Browser-based tools are limited by your device's RAM — most computers handle PDFs up to 200–500MB comfortably. For server-side tools like PDF to Word, we recommend keeping files under 50MB for reliable conversion. If you have a very large PDF, try splitting it first.
Do you add watermarks to processed files? +
No, never. PDFHarbor does not add watermarks, branding, or any modifications to your output files beyond what you explicitly requested. The files you download are clean — free users get the same quality output as everyone else.
Can I use PDFHarbor on mobile? +
Yes — PDFHarbor is mobile-responsive and works on iOS and Android browsers. Use the file picker button instead of drag-and-drop on mobile. For large or complex PDFs, a desktop or laptop will give better performance due to more available RAM.
Why does Extract Text return no text? +
This happens when your PDF is a scanned document — the pages are images of text rather than actual embedded text. PDF.js can only extract text that exists as real text in the PDF structure. For scanned PDFs, use our upcoming OCR tool (in development), or open the PDF in Google Drive and use Google Docs to extract the text.
